Building a Community Website with WebStudio

At a glance

A community member asks about creating a community website using Webstudio, as they are familiar with Figma and Framer. They need features like user posts, likes, and comments.

Other members explain that Webstudio currently cannot support full community features, though basic membership sites might be possible once CMS integration is released. The original poster, who is a livestreamer/vtuber, explains they want to create an accessible platform for their global audience, especially those in regions with platform restrictions like China.

Community members suggest alternative solutions, including using a separate platform for the community section with a subdomain setup, and recommend looking into Beam.gg as a potential solution. They also discuss Webstudio's upcoming CMS feature, which will likely be a paid feature with a possible trial period.

The discussion concludes with the original poster purchasing Webstudio's $79 lifetime deal, despite initial hesitation, and another member raising questions about Webstudio's approach to commercial versus open-source features, particularly regarding the CMS functionality.

Useful resources
hello ๐Ÿ‘‹ i had a doubt. so im new to web designing. so i went with framer since im more used to figma. so in my whole roadmap of stuff to do. ill needa make like a community site. ( where users can make posts, like and comment on other posts etc )
so i was hoping to learn webstudio too since it allows unlimited site creations + domain connections ( which helps me alot , just needa wait for cms now but yea )

so was wondering if it would be possible to make the community website using webstudio?

i can provide some examples of sites I'll be refercing for this. but most of em seems to be hardcoded ;w; since im not a coder i wonder if ill be able to make it with webstudio?

Hey Joqni welcome to the community!
For a full blown community (like we have here on discord) Webstudio won't have the features for this for quite a while. Once the CMS integration goes live you could create basic membership sites and allow users to create posts but it would not have the whole commenting/liking/messaging functionality.

Is there any reason why you want to build your own community platform instead of using something like discord/circle/skool?
hello alex thank you for making the thread so i can explain futher in detail.

yea the main reason would be for making a community platform would be ( since im a livestreamer /vtuber )
i wanted a way for audiences from different parts of the world to be able to be connected. and for em to post stuff like fanarts, stories ( derivative works )

so one of the reasons is that.

ofc discord , reddit etc are good. but the more platforms i try out. the more confusing it would be for the community members right? so i thought an all in one solution like having a website might work?

which means there wont be any geo restrictions right? for example. ppl from china arent able to use discord, youtube etc. they gotta use vpn to access content which we all normally use.

so that's why i thought making my own community platform so it will help ppl from places like china etc. to be able to access and see stuff.

that way they can post their creations too. though the site.

but yea in a way this really isnt that needed since. if you think from community member pov - all they have to do is use vpn and make social media account somehow and post the content while tagging me. right. but since X is making it pay to use. for newer accs and god knows what other issues there would be with other platforms. it would be like a long process. just to send a creation. so i can see it.

so yea i kinda like how hoyoverse has their own community website. for their games etc.
so i thought maybe if its possible i would like to do like they did ๐Ÿค”
https://www.hoyolab.com/

and they do have a mobile app version too.

ig in a way these stuff requires actual dev to code ig ๐Ÿ˜ญ
but yea its fine. im not looking to make the community site anytime soon. im still whiteboarding and mapping out my main site stuff.
but was planing things ahead just in case. so was looking for options available

i was thinking of using wix only cuz they have like forms feature. which looks like you can make posts and like and comment. but it would be pain to just move to wix for that single feature. and its limiting too. but again its fine. im more looking forward for webstudio's cms feature. i hope it won't be limited to just 1 or 10 like framer. but yea.

since im not in a rush for the community site. i can wait as long as possible till finally its possible. since now AI is a thing. i believe in a few years or months there would be solutions for this.

like to completely make a website or app for both pc, mac, ios, andorid. like discord. in one click who knows
Alternatively you could build all the site on one platform and just host the community on another (and make it look/feel like it's all part of the same website).

Have a little look at https://www.beam.gg/ when you get a chance. They also did a lifetime campaign last year, there might be some people who still have lifetime licenses available for sale.
ohh this looks cool. ill check it out. thank you for sharing.

yea i was thinking of using a subdomain for the community site rather than buying a new domain. (i already spend on short url domain and main domain xD)
so i could have main site on webstudio or framer.
Yeah absolutely! And definitely do subdomain instead of buying separate domains. Keeps everything nice and tidy ๐Ÿ™‚. You could even create a page that just redirects to your communty subdomain.

Something like mywebsite.com/community and when a user goes there it loads community.mywesbsite.com
thank you again alex! but yea im looking forward to learning webstudio soon. tbh im itching to learn it so bad but currently having exams this month. but yea after exams January ill be sure to start ๐Ÿ˜Œ. cant wait.

also i wanted to ask. when cms comes out. it would be available on free plan right? to test out and stuff?
Anytime Joqni โค๏ธ

Totally understand and good luck with the exams!

It's unlikely to be on the free plan but we will likely have some kind of trial or something along those lines that allows you to get started.

We're also running a lifetime deal at the moment which will include all current and future "pro" features.

https://webstudio.is/2023-cyber-monday-deal
ohh nice. sadly idk if ill be able to get the lifetime deal this year. since i havent used webstudio much. so i was thinking of learning it as much as i can then fully commiting to it. so ig ill wait till next year. 2024's cybermondaydeal. ( i hope you guys will be doing the same next year as well )
ofc i can get it but just wanted to safe. and see if ws is right for me.

also in case if i be on the monthly plan. i believe i can still switch to lifetime plan right?
nvm i thought bout it deeply just now.. and i just got the 79$ plan ehe.

rather than spending 20$ every month. for ws and other stuff. i can sort out ws for once. if i do the lifetime deal.
hence i can save money right. so yea.

also ngl I've been having issues with stripe. saying " your card is declined" ig its the e-mandate issue since im from india.

but yea thankfully the payment went through. and i got it. yay!

now me more excited to devote myself to learn webstudio hehe. :02Hype:
Hey guys!

Something I'm trying to get a better understanding of is this part that's on the blog of Webstudio:
Commercial Features All commercial features that are not open source are designed with one fundamental question in mind: "Is this something most individuals need?" If the answer is yes, then we will make them open source. However, if the feature is mostly necessary only for companies and organizations, then it will not be part of the Open Source Builder and we will require them to purchase it.

And CMS becoming a commercial feature. While thinking of that question if this is something most individuals need, I'm very tempted to say yes to CMS. What's the thought proces? (or am I misunderstanding something?)
Youโ€™ll love it. Iโ€™ve spent a couple days playing with it and itโ€™s pretty awesome. Lots of potential.
