Setting up domain with Squarespace

At a glance

A community member set up domain verification via Squarespace, but they are unable to add a CNAME record to the root domain as Squarespace does not allow it. They were advised to use an ALIAS record instead, but it's not working. The community members discuss potential solutions, including setting Cloudflare as the nameserver and using Cloudflare to set the CNAME record, which ultimately worked for the original poster. The answer provided is that if Squarespace does not allow setting a nameserver, the only options are to transfer the domain or keep using the www subdomain and forward the root to www, as Squarespace "sucks" in this regard.

Useful resources
Hi all! I set up the domain verification via squarespace. They advised me to do a ALIAS instead of a CNAME to get the root domain. It’s been 3 days now and it’s still “Status: Waiting for CNAME propagation”

Has anyone done this via square space? Square space does not allow me add a CNAME record to the root domain, I have been able to use a www subdomain but I’d rather have my site go to the root domain.

Can anyone advise?

if squarespace doesn't let you set a nameserver, from quick searching this might be the case, then your only options are:
  1. transfer the domain
  2. keep using www and forward root to www
This is because squarespace sucks

Thanks Oleg, I get this, what ima asking is specific to Squarespace where I’m unable to add a CNAME record to the root domain, they are saying it needs to be an ALIAS record but that does not seem to work. I cannot transfer the domain out of Squarespace
you don't need to transfer the domain
you need to set nameserver there to cloudflare
once the cloudflare's nameserer is set, you can set cname in your cloudflare account

unless they are actually supporting it, I am seeing conflicting information
They don’t support. I did the www route but how do I forward the root to www? I’ll double check the cloud fare route if it’s free
Cloudflare route worked perfect. Thanks again for suggesting!
