Limits chat

At a glance

The community member is considering the Webstudio starter plan but is concerned about the 20GB asset storage limit and whether they need to backup their websites. Other community members reassure them that 20GB is sufficient for most use cases, and that Webstudio takes care of infrastructure and backups, so manual backups are not necessary. They explain that Webstudio makes a copy of the build every time the user publishes, but there is currently no UI to browse and restore specific backups. The community members also note that exporting sites can be done through the Webstudio CLI, with guides available in the documentation.

I’m thinking of buying the starter plan but im taken back a bit by the low asset storage of 20GB. What if I need more space for backups of my websites? Do I even need to backup at all with webstudio?

Hey Alex 20GB is quite a lot considering the size of assets. Even high rez images are generally under 2mb before optimisation.

You don't need to worry about backups, we take care of the infra front and any manual backups or exports you do are not counted towards the limit.
Re coming from WordPress and backups:

Im from the same background (WP agency). With wordpress backups we're super important because things could break. Especially between different plugin updates, theme updates, WordPress updates, compatibility between them all etc.

This is not the case with Webstudio, especially if you want to also use us as the host. We take care of all the infrastructure stuff for you. This goes for security, conflicts, updates, bot protection, etc.

It's a valid concern that I also had coming from WordPress. But not something you need to worry about with Webstudio.
Re exporting sites: this is currently done with our CLI. It's a relatively simple process that even non technical creators should be able to do but does require you to open the command prompt, type in "npx webstudio" and follow the directions from there. There's guides on how to export on our docs here: docs.webstudio.is
ok sounds great. thanks for the detailed explanation.
Anytime! Let me know if any other questions come to mind πŸ˜‰
Could you provide more info about how backups work in Webstudio? For example:
  • When / how often are backups taken?
  • Is there a way to browse and restore specific backups / snapshots?
I'm also coming from the past trauma of WordPress client work where I had multiple layers of backups (server, full site, incremental). It's hard to let go of that paranoia and trust in an invisible backup system. πŸ˜€
@Oleg Isonen might you be able to share any extra info on redundancy here?
We make a copy of the build every time you publish, we just haven't added a UI to let you pick the version
